Kenotia Interview- Sandiego July 12th 2007

Kenotia Interview @ San Diego

Interview 7.12.07
San Diego, CA

Is there anything you can tell us about the new album? Do you have a specific release date now?

Ryan S.: Yes, October 2.
Carly: It is?
Ryan S.: yes, it got moved.

How do you guys get ready for a show? Like get revved up?

Ryan S.: I usually do something really retarded
Carly: Different things for all of us.
Tim: Stretches.
Carly: Yea, I warm up, that’s about it. Other than that we all pretty much just hang out, talk to everybody.
Tim: Chill with the bands.

To Carly: Have you experienced any shortcomings as a female vocalist, or being a female in a band?

Carly: I think I’m more critical of myself than everybody else. The only thing I don’t really like is being compared to other people, because I feel like it’s not the same, like, it’s not the same genre and it’s not the same, like there’s so many thousands of other bands that sound exactly the same with guy singers and no one says anything, but just because I’m a girl we get compared. But other than that everything’s been really good.

Where is your favorite place to play and why?

Andy: I don’t know. I think the most fun that it’s been on this tour was that White Rabbit place.
Carly: Yea, the White Rabbit, in San Antonio? They had a pizza place next door, and they had a lot of kids and great sound, so San Antonio’s been really good to us.

What does your name mean (Kenotia)?

Tim: It was just, like, before we had Carly in the band, when we were first starting, we had a kid named Joey and we were trying to think of a name for our band. In fact the only members in the band left are me and Ryan Cain. Joey was watching Home Alone and John Candy’s character was talking about how he’s in a polka group called the Kenotia Kickers and we took it from that.
Carly: And we misspelled it too.
Tim: Yea, and we didn’t realize it was an actual place so the spelling was accidental.
Carly: It makes us …
Tim: It works.

It makes you unique. Which kind of show do you prefer? Do you like to be up close to the kids or have barriers?

Carly: No, I like to be-
Ryan C.: As close as possible.
Carly: Yea, as close as possible. Because it just feels
Tim: I like to be on the floor if we can
Carly: It just feels weird when like, you can’t get to them and they’re all like…we’re not a metal group, we don’t need a mosh pit guard.

If you could have one super power what would it be?

Tim: Fly a kite
Ryan C.: Invisibility
Ryan S.: I’d fly
Carly: Yea, I’d want to fly. It’d be cool

How many tattoos do each of you have and what are their meanings?

Ryan C.: I have three, most of them are religious.
Ryan S.: I have one, with the theme of changes.
Carly: I’ve got five, they’re all little ones. And they’re just kind of, they’re all about music, doing what you want to do, except for the random flower which will one day be a rainforest, but that has no meaning whatsoever.
Tim: Andy and I are gay. We’re not rockstars. (they have no tattoos)

How did you decide to play your style of music?

Ryan C.: Whatever comes out, we write.
Carly: We all kind of listen to different stuff, and everyone took what they liked and just kind of put it in and it kind of came out this way. And I’m not complaining

Any suggestions for starting a band?

Carly: Don’t get discouraged. It’s really hard.
Tim: Promote on Myspace.
Carly: Yes. Use the internet, but find people who, you have to find people who not only are on the same page and want to do the same things, but are good at what they do and you can get along with them.
Ryan S.: And don’t talk about training your bitch.
Carly: Don’t forget to train your bitch. Yea, sometimes it does take a while, but it’s worth it.

When and how did you decide to play the instrument you play?

Tim: I started when Ryan Cain asked me to join this band. My brother played bass and then he went to Africa and so all of his bass stuff was lying around. I played guitar before that so I just picked the stuff up and started playing with Ryan and this stuff came out.
Ryan S.: I started in fourth grade, eleven years ago.
Carly: Taught himself.
Ryan S.: yea, taught myself.
Ryan C.: Taught myself. I just wanted to play music, go on tour.
Andy: I just played bass, and then I played drums on pillows. And I’m finally getting a drum set for the first time in like, eight days.
Tim: He plays my set now.
Andy: Yea, I play Tim’s set. I don’t know why I decided, it was fun. I’m too hyperactive not to play it.
Carly: Well, I was in band and did flute and piano, and I didn’t start singing until I was sixteen. And this is really gay, this sounds really gay, I’ve actually not told anybody this. The reason I started singing was because of Britney Spears, I’m not gonna lie, because I didn’t realize-
Tim: Kenotia’s just ended.
Carly: no no no, not that I liked her, I always wanted to be an actress, because I thought you could do it and be young, and she was the first person close to my age that got to do it and actually did it well, or big, not well.
Andy: (mocking Carly, making fun of Britney Spears)
Carly: Well yea, I don’t like her, but she can do what I can do, and I actually sounded awful when I started but I’ve been working on it, and I think I’ve gotten a little better

How did you all meet?

Ryan S.: Me and Ryan went to high school together, and were in previous bands.
Ryan C.: I met Carly at Guitar Center.
Carly: Yea we had mutual friends through a band, Silent Escape, and then I found out he was looking for a vocalist/keyboard player.
Tim: And then we kicked out our original drummer and found Andy online through myspace bulletins.

What’s your song writing process like?

Ryan S.: We just get together and jam, whoever has the riffs and then we just go off of that. We never really have a full song written, just someone’s idea and we all put in input. Just that pretty much
Carly: We try and make sure to do it together, so there’s no one person we’re depending on for songs, we all like to do it together so we all have a hand in it so it’s our songs.

If you each had a million dollars, what would you do with it?

Carly: EACH?! Probably a car and a phone and save the rest of it.
Andy: Drugs, sex and rock and roll.
Carly: Andy’s fired from the band
Andy: Actually, I wouldn’t do anything with it, except waste it.
Tim: I’d feed cats. I’d adopt homeless cats.
Carly: You’re an old woman.
Ryan C.: Make sure my hair always looked really good.
Ryan S.: I don’t know what I’d do with it, buy a condo in Atlanta.
Carly: I’d do whatever I wanted. A million dollars, you could do whatever you wanted and not work.

What is your inspiration as a band, and individually?

Ryan S.: like, a band?

Yea.

(at this point, there was a noise in the background and I couldn’t hear what a couple of them said to some of the questions, and possible got some of their voices intermingled. I tried to get as much of it as possible though, and if the band sees this and wants to make any changes, feel free to do so) =]

Carly: Heart is my favorite, I think she’s got a good voice.
Ran S.: Andy’s is Earth, Wind & Fire. I have Sigur Ros and Broken Social Scene.
Tim: Hilary Duff
Ryan C.: Relient K, there’s a lot.

Do you all get involved in writing your lyrics?

Ryan S.: No
Carly: That’s me, sorry. I am open to suggestions, but a lot of the time they just give me the to do what I want to do.

How do you come up with the lyrics? Well, the person wants to know how they’re so deep.

Carly: I try not to write about stuff that hasn’t happened to me. Like, if it’s happened to me it’s easier to explain, but, yea, I just try to stick with stuff that’s happened like, with family or friends. It’s easier to get into it that way.

If you weren’t playing music, what would you be doing?

Carly: Trying to play music.
Ryan C.: Working
Tim: Going to school
Ryan S.: Graphic Design
Tim: Not wearing girl’s jeans.
Andy: I didn’t say anything.
Ryan S.: He’d ride horses around and sleep all day.

What’s your favorite song to play live?

Carly: I like ..
Ryan C.: ‘Until This Day’ for me.
Carly: I like ‘Lonewolf’
Ryan S.: I think ‘Grave’ is my favorite.
Andy: No, the new song, but nobody knows it.
Carly: Yea no one knows the new song yet. That one would be a cool one.
Andy: It’s not on the album. It’ll be on the next one. Or, as of on the album, ‘The Day Dixie Crumbled’. But we don’t play that one.
Tim: ‘The Day Dixie Crumbled’ for me. Nobody knows that one either.
Carly: Snowman. Someone liked snowman.
Ryan S.: I did.

How has this tour been so far?

Carly: Awesome, awesome. We could not have chosen better people to come out with, everyone’s been really nice.
Ryan S.: All the guys are smokin’ hot.
Carly: All the guys wear tighter pants than I do, and they look better in them. Like, I have to give a little room for me ass, but all the other guys, they look hot!
Tim: For the record, Carly has a huge ass.
Carly: (laughing) I do, not gonna lie to you. I should be wearing black shorts right now, not white.

What is something that very little people know about you guys?

Carly: I actually get really really nervous of what people think. I’m very not thick skinned and it sucks because I’ve heard some pretty rude things said about us, and I’ve gotta get over it, but it is what it is.
Ryan S.: I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It’s not that bad any more though.
Tim: I have a beard.
Carly: No one knows that.
Tim: I keep it pretty secret.
Ryan C.: I have flat feet and asthma.
Andy: I care too much about what people think about me.

A couple of people wanted to know about what instruments you use and the types of amps and stuff. (I tried to type these answers up as well as possible, but I’m not very instrument name savvy so sorry if I messed up on something)

Ryan S.: I use a Fender 72 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue, with an orange rocker 30 head and a Mesa 4 by 12 cab.
Tim: Ampeg SBT 350 head, the solid state not the tube because I couldn’t afford the tube, and Ampeg 810 that everybody has for the cab, and a Fender Quilt top Jazz bass.
Ryan C.: Fender Telecaster, Mesa Boogie single rectifier head and a Mesa 4 by 12 cab. And tons of gear.
Carly: Andy uses Tim’s kit.
Andy: No, I have a Truth kit now.
Tim: He plays my old one though-
Andy: Which we know nothing about.
Carly: We don’t know anything about the Truth kit, but it’s coming.

Do any of you have a secret or not so secret boy band crush?

Carly: I love Nsync, I still love them. They were good! They did everything well.
Ryan S. (i think): I do too.

When did you know music was something you wanted to pursue?

Ryan S.: Fourth grade.
Ryan C.: High School.
Carly: Yea, High school.
Tim: High School.
Andy: When I realized I couldn’t do anything else but music.

What is something you have to have with you on the road?

Ryan S.: My laptop.
Ryan C.: Chapstick
Carly: Shampoo, and hair stuff, because you get gross. And baby wipes and baby powder.
Tim: Pick for my beard.
Andy: Cigarettes. I need cigarettes.
Ryan S.: But don’t start smoking kids.

Growing up, were there any bands you were completely obsessed about?

Ryan S.: Green Day
Ryan C.: Blink-182
Tim: When I was a kid, it was No Doubt.
Andy: But it got better and went to Hilary Duff.
Carly: When I first started listening to bands, it was Jimmy Eat World and Story of the Year.
Andy: Mine was Linkin Park
Carly: Yea, they’re still good.

Do any of you have a favorite book?

Ryan C.: No
Carly: I have a favorite author, Janet Evanovich. She writes really funny shit.
Ryan S.: I like ‘Night’, the book about the Holocast. I’ve read that like, three times.
Andy: I don’t read.
Ryan S.: Yea, I don’t read, but.
Ryan C.: AP Magazine.
(they then discussed how AP doesn't count and they don't actually read, but I couldn't tell who said what) =]

What’s the hardest thing about touring and what do you miss the most?

Andy: I miss home, family.
Ryan S.: Showering-
Carly: I miss family, showering, and good food.
Ryan S.: I haven’t showered yet on this tour, I’m the only one.
Tim: I actually have a bigger problem adjusting to going home and feeling like I have to shower everyday to going on tour and being like “Hey, I don’t have to shower anymore.”
Ryan S.: Not by choice, I just haven’t had the opportunity.
Ryan C.: I miss my mom

Who’s the messiest and the neatest?

Carly: Messiest is Andy.
Andy: I am the messiest. Neatest is probably Stockmal.
Ryan S.: And Tim.

Favorite Treat/snacks?

Ryan S.: In-N-Out.
Carly: I like Cool Ranch Doritos and Peanut Butter M&M’s.
Tim: Welch’s fruit snacks.
Ryan C.: Beef Jerky

This one is for Carly. It’s actually from Diego on the boards, and he wants to know if you’ll ever participate in a sake drinking competition again.

Carly: Never again in my life. Actually, you know what, that wasn’t sake. That was Chinese, like a Chinese wine. I’ve had sake, and it wasn’t that bad, but ever since that video, no more Asian wine for me. I’m gonna stick to domestic, or Italian or French.
Tim: I’m in.

What’s with the graffiti on your trailer and how did it get there?

Carly: It’s Andy’s fault.
Tim: Well, first, we were in New Orleans and some guys were tagging something else at the venue we were at. We asked them to do our trailer since it didn’t look bad and they did a really crappy job on it. Then we were on tour with Walls of Jericho at the time and the bassist was like ‘Hey that looks like crap, I’ll do it for you’ so we let him do it and it looks awesome now.
Carly: I think his name is Danny.
Tim: yea, Danny

Who would be your favorite band to tour with, or what would be your ideal tour?

Ryan S.: Mewithoutyou, Say Anything, and Saves the Day.
Carly: I wouldn’t mind going out with Saosin or Story of the Year. This tour’s been really good too.
Tim: I agree with Ryan.

What other country would you like to tour in, and do you have plans to do so?

Carly: Italy and Japan
Tim: Europe, Germany and all the places like that.
Carly: Most of the places I wanna go have to do with their food, but I think they said maybe in the next year or two, if things go well, we should be going overseas, but we’re not really sure right now. We’re just trying to tour the U.S.

What was the worst show and why?

Ryan S.: Probably the Georgia show when Andy’s arm went out because of his over extending and then his cymbals were falling all over the place and we had to cut it after like, two songs.
Carly: Everything was flying off of that kit, he wasn’t doing well, he was missing stuff, we were so embarrassed. That was a rough night.
Tim: I had fun there though. I rocked out. I just tried to distract everyone.

Would that be your most embarrassing moment?

Carly: Yea, that was pretty damn embarrassing, that was pretty rough.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Carly: Like, after high school, the things you think are such a big deal, like, what the cool people think, honestly, as soon as you get out of high school, all that crap does not matter, everything changes, and you’re fine. All of the people who were losers turn out to be cool, because I was a loser, I had no friends, I don’t know about you, did you have friends? (to Tim)
Tim: Nope.
Carly: Okay, see?
Tim: well, it took about two years into high school for me to make friends.
Carly: Yea, everything is not such a big deal. Once you calm down everything is cool.
Ryan S.: Mine is just to have fun.
Tim: Don’t stress *something I couldn’t hear*
Carly: God loves a working man!
Tim: Doctor get rid of it!

What was your most memorable fan experience?

Ryan S.: I signed a guy’s butt
Carly: I’ve signed a few nipples in my day. Wait, is that the most memorable?
Tim: My favorite was Rodney in West Virginia. He was a very nice guy just very very drunk. It was great.
Carly: I got wet boxers thrown at me, at my face, but I can’t say it was my favorite. I’ll just say it was the most memorable.

What’s the creepiest fan experience?

Ryan C.: The girl from Louisville.
Carly: O, I know, it wasn’t for us, well, it ended up being for us. There was this girl who was totally stuck on A Skylit Drive.

Yea, Lisa told me about this.

Carly: Oh my gosh, this girl was, and then, when they weren’t there, she just went around asking everybody where they were and how she could get a hold of them.
Tim: Do you have Jordan’s phone number?
Carly: And then she came and latched onto us, shoved Lisa out of the way and sat down in her merch spot and then like took my hat and put it on, and I was like ‘okay this girl has got to go’. I don’t think she meant to be mean or annoying but that was …and then Jordan finally came into the room and she goes, across the room and she goes “JORDAN!” really loud and manly a few times.
Ryan S.: I got one. A guy asked me to go in the bathroom with him and listen to his ringtone. That’s the short of it.

What are some of your favorite albums from the year so far, and what are you looking forward to being released?

Ryan S.: the new Mayday Parade is good. That’s it.
Ryan C.: Minus the Bear
Tim: What’s come out this year?
Ryan S.: Mayday Parade. That’s the only good record of the year so far.
Carly: I can’t really remember-what am I listening to right now?
Ryan S.: What, you don’t like the new Paramore?
Carly: Ick. I do and I don’t, you know what I’m saying? I love her voice but I think-
Ryan S.: The lyrics are stupid. Listen all you little spies out there!
Carly: I think the lyrics are dumb and I think her voice is awesome, but I think they’re trying to push her as a vocalist and the band took a step back and they’re playing background music, and I think they could be a lot better than they are. But I do have their album, and I do listen to it a lot. So I guess I’ll say Paramore.
Tim: I just can’t think of anything this year that I bought. Did the new Underoath cd come out? Yea, the new Underoath CD, whatever it’s called, I like that one a lot.

Would you have done anything differently so far in your music careers?

Ryan S.: Yea, signed to a major.
Carly: No, I wouldn’t have changed that.
Tim: Find a million dollars on the street.
Carly: I think everyone’s good with the way things have turned out so far. I think the one thing I would change is the way we all care so much about what people think instead of going up there and just having fun. We’re reaching that point now, so I think we’re good.
Ryan C.: It’s because we’re rocking out so hard right now.

What is something you didn’t expect about entering the music industry?

Carly: It’s not about music. It is so much about money and who you know, and it has nothing to do with how good you are. Pretty much shocked the hell about me.
Ryan S.: Partially, if you aren’t good you can’t get-
Carly: The point is-
Tim: There are a bunch of bands that don’t deserve to be where they are they just got lucky or something.
Carly: or people that look marketable and aren’t really good. That goes for any, there’s a whole bunch of bands like that.
Tim: We had to make a whole bunch of changes to our look before we got signed.
Carly: We’re still not, the label never really says anything about out music, but is always criticizing how I look, stuff like that.

If you could create your own mixed drink or cocktail, what would it be called and what would be in it?

Ryan S.: Mine is cranberry juice, orange juice and Grey Goose Vodka. I don’t know what it’s called, but it’s gonna be called Booyah!
Carly: Mine would be, like a ten times stronger version of the Long Island Iced tea and it would have a cherry floating in it and it would be called a Pulsating Vulva.
Tim: Mine’s just called Captain Morgan. It’s already out there, I can’t improve on it.

What has been your favorite tour so far?

All: This tour.

Okay, last question. Do you have any plans to make a music video?

All: No plans.
Carly: I don’t know, no plans, but we want to. I, we’re gonna have choreographed dancing, and belly shirts, and background dancers and some bitches in forties and, I’m excited!
Tim: Yes!
Ryan S.: We’ll probably know more about that in the next week, or whenever we see our label and discuss things about that.
Carly: Can I just say one thing before we go? I know we wanted to. I just want to thank everybody at KenotiaFans.Com for all the work they’ve done and they’ve done awesome and we love them and as soon as we have the actual means to actually give them stuff, we really will and just thank you to all the fans who have paid attention to us, because really, without them, we’d be playing in the garage.
